Children With Special Need

Baby Gabriel was presented at a local hospital in December 2018 while still connected to placenta many hours after his birth. His mother suffers from severe mental illness. She had given birth to Gabriel alone in a bush near where she lived with no one to help her with care after birth. Baby Gabriel weighed 4.15kg and against all odds, didn’t show any sign of mental disability like his mother. Both mother and baby stayed at the hospital for several weeks as Gabriel’s mother received psychotic treatment.
After discharge from the hospital, it was not safe to leave baby Gabriel and his mentally ill mother on their own. She needed psychotic treatment, close supervision with the baby and they didn’t have any food. So, they were put under the care of a volunteer guardian for six months and the improvement for both baby & mother were great. Gabriel’s mother could now take care of her three children without supervision. Today, she is still on medication and live independently. Many women with mental illness like Gabriel’s mother come from very poor families. They are vulnerable and have no access to psychotic treatment. They often get raped with no protection. They end up getting unwanted pregnancies and babies are born without a father around them. Often, the baby and mother both become more vulnerable and habitually homeless. .
