DPA runs a very successful sustainability goats project with children with disabilities & their families in Lamu
DPA endeavours to empower poor rural families with small projects like goat
keeping. We appeal to people of good will to donate goats for these needy
families. Goat keeping has been the most successful initiative in the rural
County of Lamu in Kenya where families have reported a great deal of
benefits from keeping goats. We support many parents of children with
disabilities are poor and do not have big chank of land for farming, so it is
much easier for them to feed goats than cows. Farmers use goat manure as
organic fertilizer to increase their crops in their small farms. Goats require
less care and management. Any body in the family can take care of goats
including women and children.
Those that keep goats say that they are great domestic animal. They give
easy access to fresh milk which is of many health benefits to both the
children with disability and their whole family. Goat meat remains a popular
choice for many, compared to meat like beef or even chicken. Children with
digestion problem find it easier to digest goat milk than cow milk. One other
advantage of keeping goats is that they grow very fast and also reach
breeding age within a very short time. They also mature fast for sale or
slaughtering.
Scientifically, it is rich in protein, calcium and iron. Goat meat is great for
those with lactose intolerance. It is also documented that it has equal
amount of protein as beef but less calories, less cholesterol and less fat but
high in iron than beef, pork, lamb and chicken.
Goats can survive in a place with harsh climatic conditions. They are able to
fight many common goat diseases. Goat project has been doing very well in
Lamu. We desire to replicate goat project in other areas as a way of
eradicating poverty and as a sustainable project for poor families who have
children living with disability.
